Honouring Indigenous Excellence in the Trades: 2025 Somerville Awards

Demonstrating dedication for Indigenous Apprentices through meaningful investment in their skills and success

In 2020, the Somerville Indigenous Trades Apprentice Awards were established by Robert B. Somerville in partnership with Trade Winds to Success. The awards represent the commitment to support Indigenous Peoples’ pursuit of meaningful and sustainable careers in the infrastructure construction industry. Somerville places a strong emphasis on developing long-term career opportunities for Indigenous candidates entering the workforce.

Opportunities such as mentorship, certification and financial supports are ways that further reinforce employment for Indigenous trades apprentices. By supporting career development in the infrastructure construction industry, together we can create a more diverse, skilled, and sustainable workforce.

 The awards are granted based on the following criteria:

• Indigenous Identity: All recipients are First Nation, Métis, or Inuit.
• Graduates of Trade Winds: Each has successfully completed a Trade Winds to Success pre-trades training program.
• Active in the Field: Recipients are currently working or are indentured apprentices in years 1 through 4 of their apprenticeship.
• Overcoming Adversity: Through a written submission, each recipient demonstrates resilience in the face of personal and systemic challenges.
• Pursuing In-Demand Trades: Special consideration is given to individuals training in pipe trades, welding, heavy equipment technician, and other high-demand areas.
