On May 6th and 7th, one of our Residential Construction students proudly represented Trade Winds at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition held at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
Jade Trent, a member of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation, competed in carpentry where she was challenged to construct a playhouse according to detailed building plans and industry standards. Throughout the competition, Jade demonstrated exceptional dedication, a strong work ethic, and precise attention to detail. Her commitment to safety and professionalism was recognized with a Safety Recognition Medal.

“It was a great experience and it didn’t feel like a competition to me, it was fun. The judges were very helpful and very willing to give support when I asked if I could do something in a safer way. It was a great experience.”

In the lead-up to the competition, Trade Winds carpentry instructor Dave McGuinness played an important role in preparing Jade for this opportunity. Through hands-on instruction, mentorship, and encouragement, Dave helped lay the foundation for her success and readiness to compete at a provincial level.
The Provincial Skills Canada Competition is designed to reward excellence in skilled trades, actively engage industry in evaluating student performance, and ensure that training remains aligned with current employer needs and industry standards.
Trade Winds is honoured to support and celebrate this experience in Jade’s trades journey as she continues to break barriers and inspire other Indigenous women pursuing careers in the skilled trades.
